2013 Audi Q5

The 2013 Audi Q5 is a compact crossover luxury SUV. With fantastic safety and weather driving capabilities, the Q5 was designed to fulfil daily needs and carrying many passengers while still upholding the luxurious qualities of other Audi vehicles.

This vehicle came into the shop for an oil consumption issue. Since the TFSI - in approximately 2012 - these 2.0L turbos have been known to use excessive oil in between oil changes. The typical allowance for oil use on the 2.0L TFSI is 0.5l per 1000 km according to Audi Canada.

In some cases, we have seen that the vehicle is using more than that which brings us to our oil consumption issue. When you have this type of concern as a customer, it’s best to have it inspected and diagnosed. One thing that a customer can do in this situation is monitor their oil. If they have to add oil, then how much? Document the mileage, and leave a paper trail to see if oil is being used more frequently compared to normal. That would help narrow down the average consumption, and be given to the technician during the diagnosis state.

A common cause for the oil consumption issue is the Oil Separator. The oil separator is designed to pull the oil vapor from the crankcase, but when the diagram breaks inside the oil separator, the engine will start to pull the fumes into the intake causing the vehicle to use excessive oil. When the vehicle is in the shop for diagnosis, we check the crankcase pressure with a manometer to see the value in the crankcase. If this is out of spec, it is recommended to replace the oil separator. Once the separator is replaced, we recheck the values in the oil separator to make sure our values are correct. If the oil separator checks out okay, then the issue will be from an internal engine problem ( valve seals or piston rings, and turbocharger are some possible sources).
